Making Connections

Our ensembles jumped back in to rehearsals this week, ready to get moving! Each group worked to develop movement sequences, as well as some additional content inspired by our questionnaires.

This week’s check in question was “What is the best thing on the internet?” Like it or not, social media is a big tool for connection. Many members of our ensemble rely on Facebook to stay in touch with family and friends, Instagram to share their ideas and what matters to them, and YouTube for entertainment. Our teaching teams used social media as the inspiration for our work this week.

Viral Dances

The in-person ensembles took their inspiration from TikTok and choreographed Viral Dance Crazes. Working in groups of 4 o 5, each person picked a signature dance move, and then worked together to figure out the right sequencing and speed for their moves. Which moves would you pick to create your viral dance?

Instagram Slideshows

The Sunday ensemble played a game called Slideshow where they made a series of frozen pictures that could be pat of an Instagram series. Here’s a series called “Hanging with my Friends” featuring Amy, Maggie, Emily and Jack dancing at a club, watching a movie, and getting drinks at a bar.

Combat Choreography

The virtual ensemble took inspiration from the #BossBitchFightChallenge that made the rounds on Instagram early in the pandemic, and practiced throwing punches and kicks to create fight sequences. We had a blast taunting and challenging each other, and reacting in over-the-top ways!

Ensembles also started created characters and improvising scenes and monologues based on the Interview Questions everyone answered in Week #1. There’s a lot of ideas and a whole lot of possibilities!

This stage of the devising process is overwhelming and exciting all at once! Over the next few weeks, we’ll keep trying out different material and playing with new ideas to see what sticks. Stay tuned to see more of our process and be sure to save the date for Saturday November 19th so you can see what we create!
