Craft: Shakespearean Ruff

One of the challenges of working virtually is finding ways to keep us all engaged from our own homes. To kick off the semester, we sent all 72 of our actors, facilitators, and teaching artists custom Story Kits with visual aids, activities, and crafts specially designed for Romeo & Juliet Remix. This week, you can play along with us as we make one of our costume pieces…a RUFF COLLAR!

What is a Ruff?

Ruff collars were a popular piece of clothing during Shakespeare's time. They could protect people's expensive clothes, and became a symbol of wealth and status. They also encourage good posture, which is important for any actor!

Why are we making Ruffs?

All of the narrators in Romeo & Juliet Remix will wear a ruff. Romeo & Juliet Remix will begin with our entire ensemble performing the Prologue in American Sign Language. If you’ve been participating in #SignSaturday, you can make your own Ruff to wear when you film your piece….or wear it just for fun!

You will need:

  • 30-50 Coffee filters

  • Ribbon or string

  • Stapler

  • Hole punch

  • Scissors

Instructions:

  • Step 1. Fold your coffee filter in half, then in half again.

  • Step 2. Staple your folded coffee filter, about 1″ or so up.

  • Step 3. Hole punch just under the staple.

  • Step 4. Cut the point off the folded filter, just under the hole you made.

  • Step 5. Repeat steps 1-4 a bunch of times with all of your coffee filters!

  • Step 6. String the coffee filters on the ribbon.

  • Step 7. Fan the coffee filters out.

  • Step 8. Tie your ruff around your neck and practice your best Shakespearean monologue!
